HSK 3.0 vs HSK 2.0: What's Changing and Which Word List to Study

If you are learning Chinese for the HSK, you have probably seen "HSK 3.0" and wondered whether your word lists are now out of date. The short answer: the exam is moving from six levels to nine, and every level asks for more words. The words you already know are not wasted, though. Most of them carry straight over.

The short version: HSK 3.0 has nine levels in three stages, and its HSK 1 to 6 word lists are bigger (HSK 1 goes from 150 to 300 words). CTI's notice puts the first worldwide HSK 3.0 exam on December 13, 2026. If your test is before that, study the current lists. If it is after, study the new ones, but start with the old lists: about nine in ten of the HSK 1 to 3 words are also in the new HSK 1 to 3.

What HSK 3.0 is

HSK 3.0 is the new version of the HSK exam, run by Chinese Testing International (CTI). It is built on a national standard: the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (GF 0025-2021), which China's Ministry of Education published in March 2021 and which took effect on July 1, 2021. The standard sorts learners into "three stages, nine levels" (三等九级) and describes five skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation.

CTI's HSK page describes the new HSK as an upgrade "from the current six-level system to a new 'Three Stages, Nine Levels' framework," covering elementary, intermediate and advanced levels, and testing those five skills, with translation at the advanced levels.

The current system, which most textbooks and apps still use, is usually called HSK 2.0. It has six levels, HSK 1 to HSK 6.

How many words each level needs

The biggest practical change is the word count. Both columns are cumulative: the number for HSK 3 includes the words from HSK 1 and 2.

LevelHSK 2.0 wordsHSK 3.0 words
HSK 1150300
HSK 2300500
HSK 36001,000
HSK 41,2002,000
HSK 52,5003,600
HSK 65,000+5,400
HSK 7 to 9(none)11,000

The HSK 2.0 numbers come from CTI's level table. The HSK 3.0 numbers are the entry counts in the vocabulary section of the new syllabus. The syllabus also lists characters: HSK 1 alone has 246 characters to recognize.

Two things stand out. The beginner levels grow the most: HSK 1 doubles, and HSK 3 goes from 600 to 1,000 words. And the top of the old scale, HSK 6, is now the end of the middle stage, with three more levels above it.

Is your HSK 2.0 vocabulary wasted?

No. We compared the HSK 2.0 word lists in our app with the vocabulary list in the new syllabus, word by word:

So the old lists are a solid core of the new ones. What they don't give you is the extra words. HSK 3.0 levels 1 to 3 have 1,000 entries, and the old HSK 1 to 3 lists cover about 550 of them. Expect roughly 450 new words to learn for a 3.0 HSK 3. (We matched words by their written form. A few entries differ slightly between the lists, so treat these as close estimates.)

Which list should you study now?

Your exam is before December 13, 2026. Study the current lists and use the current sample tests. CTI's HSK 1 page still describes the current HSK 1: 40 listening and reading questions, a total score of 200, and 120 to pass.

Your exam is after that, or you have no date yet. Aim for HSK 3.0. A sensible order:

  1. Learn the old HSK 1 and 2 lists first. They are short, almost all of their words carry over, and most textbooks and apps still teach them.
  2. Then work through the new HSK 1 to 3 list and pick out the words you don't know yet. That is the roughly 450-word gap.
  3. Practice all five skills, not just reading. Speaking and writing are part of the new framework, so add a little of both every week.

You're learning for travel, work or fun, with no exam in mind. Either list works. Learn the most common words first, which is what HSK 1 and 2 are in both versions.

A study habit that works for either list

Whichever list you follow, the method is the same: see a word, try to remember it, then check. Keep the words you got right moving forward and bring back the ones you missed.

That is how HSK Flashcard works. It follows the HSK 2.0 lists (HSK 1 to 6, about 5,000 words) today. Each card shows the characters and the pinyin (you can hide the pinyin in Settings), and you tap Reveal to check the meaning. A play button reads the word aloud with the iPhone's built-in Mandarin voice. Swipe right if you knew it and left to put it in your Review pile, then come back to the Review pile later. A daily streak and a progress bar for each level keep you going.

It is free to start: you get the first 20 new words, then 10 new words a day, three review sessions and two quizzes a day, with ads. HSK+ (yearly or lifetime) removes the limits and the ads.

FAQ

Is HSK 2.0 still valid?

CTI says HSK scores are valid for two years from the exam date (see the HSK 1 page). A score from a current-format exam is still a score from the official exam.

Is HSK 3.0 harder than HSK 2.0?

Each level asks for more. HSK 1 goes from 150 to 300 words and HSK 3 from 600 to 1,000. The new framework also covers speaking and writing, and translation at the advanced levels.

What are HSK 7, 8 and 9?

They are the advanced stage of HSK 3.0, above the old top level. The new syllabus lists about 11,000 words for HSK 7 to 9 combined, and chinesetest.cn already has a page for the HSK 7 to 9 exam.

Does HSK 6 in the old system equal HSK 6 in HSK 3.0?

Not exactly. The old HSK 6 asked for 5,000 or more words. The new HSK 6 asks for 5,400 and sits in the middle stage, with three advanced levels above it.

Should I throw away my HSK 2.0 flashcards?

No. About nine in ten of the old HSK 1 to 3 words are also in the new HSK 1 to 3. Keep them and add the new words on top.
